Lupa's Diagnostics module is the single home for everything you order through integrated lab or an imaging suppliers and for every result that comes back.
Where Diagnostics live
Individual requests and results will always live on the pet or appointment page they were ordered from under the Diagnostics section. For an overview of all requests and results for a practice, you can use the diagnostics app. Click the Apps icon in the top navigation and pick Diagnostics. The page is split into two tabs:
Tab | What it shows |
Lab | Every laboratory test order placed through your connected providers (IDEXX, Zoetis, Laboklin, VetEnvoy) |
Imaging | X-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and other diagnostic imaging studies from your registered DICOM machines |
π Don't see the Imaging tab? Imaging is enabled per organisation. Contact Lupa support to turn it on for your practice.
The Lab table at a glance
The Lab table is a searchable table covering every lab order in the practice. Use it to triage results, find a specific order, or get a sense of what's outstanding.
Column | What it shows |
Ordered Tests | Test codes for what was ordered β hover a code for the full name |
Requested At | Date and time the order was placed |
Assignee | The team member responsible for reviewing the result |
Patient | Pet name, photo, and species β click to open the pet record |
Status | Where the order is in its lifecycle (see status table below) |
Invoice Status | Whether the diagnostic fee has been linked to an invoice β only visible when Lab Fee Automation is enabled |
Integration | Which provider processed the order |
Last Update | How long ago the order was last updated |
The toolbar above the table gives you search, filter (status, assignee, integration, date range), and column sorting. The three-dot menu on each row exposes the actions you'd expect: View Results, View Appointment, Open PDF, Add to Invoice, Link to Pet, Sync with provider, and Cancel. The full step-by-step for working with these is covered in .
When you open an order to view its details, you'll see a Sync with provider button in the header alongside the other order actions. Click it to pull the latest results directly from the provider β useful if a result was expected but never appeared. Lupa shows a Synced with provider confirmation when the refresh completes. If something goes wrong, you'll see a Failed to refresh order message with more detail.
Click Print in the top-right corner of the order pop-up to send the order summary and full results to your printer. The browser's print dialog opens and only the order content prints β the surrounding table and pop-up chrome are hidden automatically.
Lab order statuses (full reference)
This is the canonical list of every state a lab order can be in. Other articles link here rather than restating it.
Status | What it means |
Created | The order has been recorded in Lupa but not yet sent to the provider |
Ordered | Successfully submitted to the lab provider |
Waiting for Sample | The lab is waiting to physically receive the sample |
Sample Received | The lab has logged the sample into their system |
Running | Tests are being processed at the lab |
Partial | Some test groups are back; others are still processing |
Complete | All test groups have returned β open the order to review |
Error Placing Order | The provider rejected the submission. Open the order to see the provider's error message |
Cancelled | The order was cancelled before all results were returned |
π Results update automatically. Lupa polls each connected provider every 30 seconds and updates the order status and result data as soon as the lab responds. If a result was expected but hasn't appeared, use Sync with provider from the order's three-dot menu or from inside the order itself to fetch it on demand.
Imaging order statuses (full reference)
Status | What it means |
Scheduled | The order has been sent to the imaging machine and is waiting for the study to be performed |
Completed | Images have been captured and pushed to the Orthanc server β they're available in Lupa |
Error | Something went wrong with the order or the image capture β open the order for details |
How Diagnostics connect to the rest of Lupa
Diagnostics aren't a silo β every order is linked to the records around it.
Where it shows up | What you'll see |
The appointment | Orders placed during a consult appear in the appointment's Diagnostic Tests section. Use View Appointment from any order's three-dot menu to jump back |
The pet record | Orders and their results appear on the pet's Diagnostic Tests tab and on the medical-history timeline as a Lab Result(s) entry, building a permanent diagnostic history. Cancelled orders are hidden from the tab by default β use the status filter to show them if you need to. Results from cancelled orders are not shown on the timeline. |
The invoice | When Lab Fee Automation is set up and the test is linked to a service, fees flow onto the appointment invoice without anyone having to type them in. The Lab table's Invoice Status column is your audit view |
Supported lab providers
Lab integrations are configured by Lupa during onboarding β you can't connect a provider yourself. The table below shows which providers are available and where to read more about each.
When you create a new diagnostic reference list, it starts empty. Open the list and use the Add tests from provider button in the toolbar to choose the tests your clinic actually runs, or click Add all to bring in the provider's full catalogue at once.
Provider | Type | What it covers | Detailed article |
IDEXX | In-house + reference lab | VetConnect Plus catalogue, Catalyst / ProCyte / SediVue analyser support, electronic ordering, automatic results, PDF download
Zoetis | In-house | VetScan point-of-care analysers β ordering and automatic results
Laboklin | Reference lab | Full Laboklin catalogue, electronic ordering through an embedded Laboklin interface, automatic results | Contact Lupa support |

Frequently asked questions
Where do I actually place an order β here or somewhere else? Always start the order from inside Lupa, either from the appointment's Diagnostic Tests section or the pet profile's Diagnostic Tests tab. The Diagnostics page is for tracking and reviewing β it's not the typical starting point for a new order. The full step-by-step is in . Why do some orders have a red question mark next to the pet name? That order was placed outside Lupa β usually directly through the IDEXX portal β and arrived back through the integration without being tied to a Lupa record. Use the Link to Pet action on the order's three-dot menu to attach it to the right patient. Can I see results from other practices or other systems? Only orders placed through your Lupa-connected providers appear here. Results from another clinic or another PMS would need to be imported separately. Who can view diagnostic orders and results? Anyone with access to the patient's record. The Assignee field is for accountability and follow-up, not access control. Can I add a new lab provider myself? No β provider connections are configured by Lupa during onboarding. To add IDEXX, Zoetis, or Laboklin contact Lupa support. What if a result hasn't come back yet? Check the order's status in the Lab table. Running, Sample Received, and Waiting for Sample all mean the lab still has the sample. External reference-lab tests can take 1β3 business days. If the status shows the order is complete at the provider's end but the result hasn't appeared in Lupa, click Sync with provider from the order's three-dot menu or from inside the order β this fetches the result directly and won't affect any other pending orders. For genuinely urgent cases, contact the lab directly.
