Zoetis lab integration

The Zoetis integration connects Lupa to VetScan Connect so a vet or nurse can place lab orders against Zoetis's reference labs and in-house VetScan analyzers from a consultation, then receive results back inside the patient record. Zoetis sits alongside the IDEXX integration: each provider is enabled independently, and you choose between them at the moment you order tests.

Availability. The Zoetis (VetScan) integration is provisioned centrally by the Lupa team. Once it's enabled for your branch you'll see VetScan as a provider option on diagnostic orders. If you can't see it, contact Lupa support to onboard your VetScan Connect account.

What you can do with the integration

  • Place orders for Zoetis reference-lab tests directly from a consultation, an invoice, or the Diagnostics page.

  • Receive results automatically. Lupa polls VetScan Connect on a 30-second cycle, so completed analytes flow into the patient record without anyone needing to refresh.

  • Open the Zoetis portal for any order to read the full PDF report or check details that aren't surfaced in Lupa.

  • Cancel an order before the lab has started running it.

Place an order

  1. From the consultation, invoice, or Diagnostics page, click Order Tests.

  2. Pick VetScan (or your branch-specific display name, e.g. Zoetis Reference Labs) as the provider.

  3. Confirm the species and Lupa pre-fills it from the pet's record. If the species is missing, set it on the pet first; Zoetis only accepts the species codes it knows about (Dog, Cat, etc.).

  4. Pick the tests you need. Each test shows the test code, sample requirements, and turnaround time. You can pick multiple at once.

  5. (Optional) Assign the order to a colleague, which is useful if a tech runs the sample.

  6. Click Place Order. Lupa builds the Zoetis-formatted XML order and submits it. When the order is accepted by VetScan Connect it appears in Diagnostics with status Waiting for sample.

Pet records are anonymised when sent to Zoetis. Lupa transmits a synthetic pet identifier (not the client's name or your local Lupa ID) and ASCII-only versions of any names containing accents. This is intentional and keeps the data transmitted to Zoetis minimal while still allowing a clean round-trip for results.

Read results

Order status moves through:

Status

Meaning

Waiting for sample

Order is registered with Zoetis; waiting for the sample to arrive (or for the analyzer run to start).

Partial

Some panels have returned; others still pending. Look at the result list to see which.

Complete

All ordered panels have returned.

Cancelled

Order cancelled in Lupa or in VetScan Connect.

Each result shows the panel name, individual analyte values, units, and reference ranges. If Zoetis flags an analyte as out of range it is highlighted in the result table. To see the full Zoetis-rendered report, click PDF on the order; to jump into VetScan Connect, click Open in VetScan.

30-second polling. New results take up to a minute to appear in Lupa after Zoetis publishes them. There is no manual refresh, so you can let the next poll cycle.

Cancel an order

Open the order from Diagnostics and click Cancel. Lupa calls Zoetis to remove it from the queue and updates the local status to Cancelled. If the sample has already gone into the analyzer, the cancellation is a best-effort, as Zoetis decides whether the run continues. The next poll will reflect Zoetis's final status.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Likely cause

Fix

VetScan provider not in the dropdown

Integration not enabled for your branch

Contact Lupa support. Zoetis integrations are centrally provisioned.

Order rejected with a species error

The pet's species doesn't map to a Zoetis-supported species code

Edit the pet to use a recognised species (Dog, Cat, etc.). Re-order, as Zoetis cannot accept exotic or unmapped species.

Results never arrive even though Zoetis has them

Polling stalled or credentials expired

Contact Lupa support; we can verify the integration is healthy. The fallback is to read the report from VetScan Connect directly via Open in VetScan.

Tests in the dropdown look stale

Reference data sync runs periodically, and newly published Zoetis tests can take up to 24 hours to show up

Wait for the next sync, or ask Lupa support to refresh the catalogue manually.

Pet name on the Zoetis report has X characters in place of accents

Zoetis VetXML only accepts ASCII characters in names

Expected behaviour, as Lupa replaces non-ASCII characters with X before submitting. The pet record in Lupa keeps the original name.

FAQs

Why are some pet names sanitised when sent to Zoetis?

Zoetis's VetXML format is strict about accepting only ASCII characters. Lupa replaces accented or non-Latin characters with X so the order is accepted; the pet record in Lupa keeps the original spelling. You'll only see the sanitised version on the Zoetis side.

Can I edit a result manually?

No. Results are read-only and come directly from VetScan Connect. If you need to add commentary, do it in the consultation notes alongside the order.

Does this integration cover Zoetis VetScan in-house analyzers?

The Zoetis integration in Lupa handles orders and results that flow through VetScan Connect. Whether your specific in-house analyzer publishes through VetScan Connect depends on the model and how Zoetis has configured your account. Check with Zoetis if you're unsure.

What's the difference between Zoetis and IDEXX?

They're independent third-party labs. The two integrations are separate. See for the IDEXX equivalent. If your branch has both enabled, you choose between them when you click Order Tests.

Why is the pet's date of birth not required for Zoetis when it is for IDEXX?

Each lab's API has its own validation rules. IDEXX rejects external orders without a date of birth; Zoetis does not. Lupa enforces each provider's rules so you only see the warning when it actually matters.
